Brief History Of The Tarot
by
Autumn Mist

The Tarot was created in Northern Italy around the
year 1430.  The Cards were based on positions and
ways of Roman Catholic Church.  They were named
after the Tarocchi River which runs in Northern Italy.
Tarocchi is also the name of a Game in which the
Cards were used in medieval days.  This Game was
wide-spread in Northern Italy, German and Austria
in which it was referred to as Tarock.  Soon, it spread
throughout Europe.

In the 18th and 19th Centuries, the Tarot had
become popular in the occult community and slightly
changed to meet the world of divination.

There are 78 cards in each deck.  The first 21 are
called the Major Arcana.  The remaining 56 cards are
divided into 4 suits of 14 cards each.  The traditional
Italian Suits are the Swords, Batons, Coins and
Cups.  In modern decks, Batons are commonly called
Wands and Coins are called Pentacles (hence, the
occult influence).

The most beautifully designed decks in the world are
the still the Italian Decks.
